Have a Stompin' Shootin Christmas

Today on the news regarding the biggest shopping day of the year come two reports:

A 34 year old employee of Walmart in Long Island, NY, who was stampeded to death as all those eager shoppers plowed into the store, knocking the door right out of the frame, and then stampeded the man to death. I guess getting those good deals was worth more than this man's life! And to top it off, the crowds were angry when they were told to leave the store so the officials could investigate. One angry customer was heard saying, "Well, I was in the line from 4am this morning! They're animals!"

Then, out in Palm Desert, at a Toys R us, two women got into a fist fight, and their two husbands pulled out guns and shot each other to death. But at least they got that special toy for their kids! Dad is dead, and mom's are arrested, but the kids will be so much better off because they got that toy they always wanted! GEEEZ!

Really conjurs up the emotions of love and good will toward all, doesn't it? It reminds me of the angels ensuring that the birth of the Christ Child is bringing peace on earth. Unless maybe you are in Toys R Us or Walmart! That's what I think of when I want to go Christmas shopping. . . take my hand gun with me. You never know when you might just have to shoot someone in order to ensure getting that special toy.

One more reason for me to remain in the house and let the crowds die down a whole lot, and maybe even buy my gifts on the computer from home.

So what happened to all the comments which were here yesterday?

I asked you why you were OK with governments having weapons, seeing as how, historically, it is governments with weapons which do 99.9 percent of the murdering. And I asked what your propose to do about it.

So what is your answer?

David, I am sorry, I never saw any comments here yesterday. I have checked the blog daily and not seen responses. But, to answer your question, I am basically a pacifist, so I don't like weapons in governments either, but I am not sure what I can do about that alone. What are your proposals?

Susan,

Thanks for responding. I hope you had a very Merry Christmas.

A pacifist, eh? So if you were a primary grade school teacher, and some raving lunatic with an ax (no waiting period or permit required at the hardware store) crashed into your classroom and started hacking at your little ones, and you just happened to have a loaded .45 at hand, you wouldn't pick it up and use it?

Do you think guns are the only weapons? St. Stephen was killed with rocks, ya know. Are you in favor of 'Rock Control'? Or just 'Assault Rocks'?

What do I propose to do about the problem of government with guns? I think the framers had it right when they gave the government as little power as necessary, with the people retaining all the rest. That would include the right to personal self defense. I read the Second Amendment as recognizing my absolute right to carry a weapon in any venue where I am allowed to enter. That includes banks, churches, courts and airplanes. Obviously my right to do that has been abridged.

Governments do have legitimate functions, you know. I don't propose to abolish government because some people have misused government power. Why should you propose that I be prevented from defending myself and my family because some people have misused the tools which are suited to that job?

Every genocide in the last unlamented century was preceeded by government 'gun-control', which disarmed the targeted population. Gun control kills, because it disarms potential victims and concentrates the ability to exercise lethal force in institutions which often lack corrective negative feedback.

Happy New Year, and your turn.

David,

I did have a very Merry Christmas and I hope you did too. By any chance are you related to some Davies in Central Washington State? I knew some Davies up there when I used to live in that area.

First of all, David, if I was an elementary school teacher I wouldn't "happen to have a .45 nearby." Especially a loaded one. And so the scenario you propose wouldn't be possible. To be honest with you, I don't know how I would respond in that situation, other than I would do whatever I could to try and protect the children and talk the "lunatic" down somehow. Would that be effective? Maybe so, maybe not.

Secondly, I don't think the founding fathers of this country were talking about assault rifles when they were talking about the right to bear arms, and the thought of anyone having the right to carry a gun into a church, bank, movie theatre or wherever you choose to go is a recipe for anarchy. I have no desire to go back to the wild, wild west.

And I would dispute your thought that "every genocide in this last unlamented century was proceeded by government gun control." Give some examples.

Government has many wonderful functions, to provide for the health and welfare of it's citizens.Have you ever wondered why we, in the USA, have the most violent record of any civilized country in the world, and we are the ones with the most lax gun control laws of any? When the criminals on the street have bigger guns than the law enforcement officials, there is something wrong. I am not suggesting taking away guns for the hunter who wants to go out and hunt for his family, but I don't see how anyone needs an AK47, or an oozie, for just basic Joe on the street. There is no reason for it.

I doubt that I will change your mind and I know you won't change mine!

My original message wasn't really about the pros and cons of gun control anyway. It had more to do with a very pathetic loss of the meaning of the message of Christmas. It was a prime example of one who "has the right to carry a gun" into a store, and now there are two families without fathers,(brainless wonders might be a better definition for them however.),and it was over a toy, or getting a deal. It has nothing to do with the Christchild being born to give us all new life, and hope, and peace. But one can be so callous as to stampede a man to death, or shoot someone in the store over some "great deal" in the store. So that was my point.

I hope you have a wonderful New Year, and I hope you never have to be in a situation where you would have to protect your family, by taking someone else's life. That would be horrible for anyone.

And by the way, thanks so much for responding with some rational thought and not being insulting because I might disagree with you. I appreciate it.

Susan
